New Cork, No Cap

A cleaner, greener look for our wine

We’re making some thoughtful changes to our packaging—switching to eco-friendly corks that lower the chance of ‘corked’ wine and saying goodbye to tin capsules, which means less waste (over a ton each year!) without affecting the quality you love.

New cork

We’ve used traditional corks for years with great success; however, their biggest flaw is that up to 2% of wines end up being ‘corked’ through no fault of the wine itself! The TCA compound that causes that musty aroma comes from these traditional corks, not the wine. That impacts you, our customers, the most, so we’ve made some changes:

CHANGES MADE

  • We are switching over to a natural composite cork which binds small bits of cork together with beeswax and sustainable plant material.
  • The small particles are able to be treated for the TCA compound in a way that traditional corks cannot— completely removing the risk of a ‘corked’ bottle while still being made of natural cork!
  • The process uses carbon dioxide to treat the cork pieces, similar to how coffee beans are decaffeinated.
  • For the detail lovers: the new corks are called “Origine” and made by the French company Diam Bouchage. This closure prevents corked bottles and improves the consistency of aging. We also like that the company sponsors beehives and manages their cork forests sustainably.

no cap

Starting with the last shipment you may have noticed some bottles did not have tin capsules protecting the cork on the top of the bottle. Moving forward, we’re getting rid of them completely for the following reasons:

CHANGES MADE

  • Historically, capsules were designed to protect the cork from pests and mold. As people are not aging their wine in dark caves below their houses these days, the foil is more traditional than functional.
  • By eliminating the cap, we will be able to remove over a ton of tin waste from our products annually.
  • We are not the first! Many wineries are moving towards bottling even their high-end bottles without a capsule, prompting industry leaders like Wine Spectator and Wine Enthusiast to publish articles praising the trend.
