Our Sangiovese vines are just over 20 years old, and after farming these vines for nearly two decades we’ve come to know them intimately. 2017 was an even, temperate growing year with a heat spike at the end of the season, however, Sangiovese does well with heat due to a canopy that reflects the sun and protects the grapes.
In the winery, our goal is to combine dusty, earth-driven old world style with the bright and expressive fruit of Paso Robles. in 2017 we co-fermented this Sangiovese with 5% of its Italian cousin, Barbera. Our Winemaker foot-stomps these grapes to get a gentle extraction and keep the old world methods alive in California. We aged this Sangiovese in large-format puncheon barrels to slow down the evolution of this wine and blended in 20% Cabernet Sauvignon after barrel aging to add depth and concentration and to accent the red fruit characteristics.
