We farm 9 acres of Grenache at Jespersen Ranch. The cooler climate can be a challenge as Grenache likes to hang on the vine late into the season. 2017 was a cooler year in the vineyard but with no rain and a heat spike toward the end of the season, the Grenache fruit ripened beautifully and we received a good crop. The Grenache grapes came entirely from block 14 at Jespersen Ranch.
We fermented this wine in small lots and a large once-filled oak cask with 20% whole cluster Grenache and co-fermented with 10% Syrah. 8% more Syrah was added after fermentation for color and depth. We started off with frequent punchdowns and pumpovers for aggressive maceration but then backed off quickly. The wine was then aged in large format 500L new French oak barrels to preserve the earthy, peppery flavor that complements the wine’s natural acidity. The resulting wine is well balanced with rich color and flavor - the layers will continue to develop with air so decant before drinking if possible.
