Jespersen Ranch lies three miles from the Pacific Ocean and derives much of its personality from the coast. The growing season for Chardonnay Edna Valley is long and cool with early morning fog and mid-afternoon ocean breezes that create perfect growing conditions for Chardonnay. A few years ago we planted a portion of the vineyard to new clones of Chardonnay in order to increase complexity from the site. 2017 was our second vintage using these new clones and despite heat late in the summer followed by rain, the fruit developed beautifully.
We hand-pick our Chardonnay grapes and whole-cluster press them into a stainless steel tank before being racked to barrels. The wine went through primary fermentation in 35% New French Oak barrels and was aged on the lees with frequent stirring to create a creamy mouthfeel. The wine went through secondary fermentation naturally while in barrel, and retained a bright saline characteristic and zesty acidity.

"Niner has the luxury of having two winemakers that get to focus on specific wines, and Molly Bohlman takes the Burgundian varieties, and gets her own dedicated facility to deal with them. This Chardonnay comes from the Jespersen Ranch part of the estate about 30 miles south of the winery, and it’s a cool, coastal site not far from the Pacific Ocean. The result here is a nicely enhanced version of brightly acidic fruit, where tension between apple, pear, oak spice and quince notes keep your interest and bring you back to the glass. Low alcohol just adds to the fun here. Well crafted!"
