The grapes for this wine came from Block 3 Cabernet Sauvignon, planted on the steep hillside to the right side of our famed heart. This block of clone 337 was planted in 2007, making it the oldest blocks of Cabernet Sauvignon on the property. In 2015, exceptionally windy conditions during spring caused difficulty for self-pollinating grapes and led to sparse clusters and reduced yields across vineyards in California. Despite this, we found that Block 3 Cabernet Sauvignon retained the same gorgeous dark cherry and depth of character that has made it a favorite area of the vineyard over the last decade.
The small amount of fruit we did receive in 2015 was beautiful. We co-fermented this hillside Cabernet Sauvignon with Malbec and Petit Verdot to add even more depth, concentration and layered structure. We then aged it in 65% new French Oak barrels for 22 months. Block 3 consistently produces some of the most interesting Cabernet Sauvignon in our portfolio and in 2015 its cascade of flavors and complex construction made it a large piece of Fog Catcher. The remainder went into this extremely limited bottling.
