2007Syrah

Bootjack Ranch, Paso Robles

This complex wine shows black fruit, berries, plum, slate, wet stone, and a smoky oak character in the nose. It has floral notes in the mouth, with good acidity. Flavors include raspberry, meat drippings, bacon fat and tar. There is a rustic hickory pit barbecue essence to this wine, and it has big tannins with a finish of fresh wood shavings. Both cool climate (black pepper) and warm climate (spearmint) attributes are nicely represented.

  • 90 Points - The Rhone Report: The 2007 Niner Wine Estates Syrah Bootjack Ranch is a blend of 97% Syrah and 3% Petite Sirah that was aged in a combination of French and Hungarian oak, with one-third being new. Showing an opaque purple color as well as excellent notes of wild berry, black currant, toasty oak, violets, and subtle peppered meat characteristics, this medium to full-bodied Syrah packs a solid dose of fruit, but manages to stay fresh and lively on the palate. Opening up with air, this has juicy acidity and solid purity. Give bottles a year or two in the cellar, and then drink over the following 5-8 years. - Jeb Dunnuck
