San Diego International Wine Competition | 2015

January 27, 2015

We are proud to announce that the 2010 Fog Catcher and 2012 Estate Pinot Noir received Platinum medals and the 2012 Estate Reserve Syrah received Gold in the 2015 San Diego International Wine Competition.   Reviews of both Platinum wines by head judge Michael Franz:

2010 Fog Catcher - 96 Points: This wine was tasted blind by a panel at the San Diego International Wine Competition, sent forward to me with a score of 96--with which I can only concur. I’ve had limited experiences with wines from Niner Wine Estates, but those experiences have been uniformly impressive, and this is certainly no exception. The wine shows excellent color concentration with no hint of four years since vinification, followed by expressive aromatics and flavors that are centered on a core of intense blackberry fruit. Pure but very powerful, those fruit notes are accented with lovely little nuances of spices, vanilla, cocoa and tobacco leaf. The tannins are abundant but easily counterbalanced by the wine’s ripe, energetic fruit. Simply terrific, this wine serves as an official announcement of a new star in the California wine firmament. Platinum Award winner at the 2015 San Diego International Wine Competition.

2012 Estate Pinot Noir, Edna Valley - 94 Points: This is hardly an inexpensive wine, but in global terms, it is a clearly outstanding Pinot Noir that is priced far below most of it qualitative peers. It shows good concentration by its appearance as well as its weight and depth, and yet these qualities were not purchased at the expense of the delicacy for which we turn to Pinot in the first place. Moderately expressive aromas recall black cherries above all, with very subtle undertones of spices and toast. The wine really shines on the palate, punching above its weight with very pure fruit notes that are seamlessly integrated with acidity, wood and tannin. Clearly this was made from excellent fruit, but the craftsmanship in the winery is equally impressive. Platinum award winner at the 2015 San Diego International Wine Competition.

January 11, 2015

We are extremely proud to announce that our 2011 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon took home a Double Gold Medal and three of our estate wines took home Gold Medals in the 2015 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition.   The number of entries (the largest competition of American wines in the world), quality of the judges and format (blind tasting) make this competition one we look to internally as an indicator of quality.

LA Magazine | 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon

January 5, 2015

2010 Cabernet Sauvignon | Paso Robles
"A lovely ruby color gives way to a nose of spiced, dark red, and black fruit, and earthy character, developing into red cherry and noticeable black raspberry spice on the palate. There’s mouthwatering acidity, fine-grained tannins, and an ethereal smoky note carried through on the finish–like a memorable last line from a great American novel."  Read the full article>>

Anthony Dias Blue | 90 Points 2012 Estate Malbec | 91 Points 2012 Estate Syrah

December 2, 2014

2012 Estate Malbec | Paso Robles
"Smooth and rich with deep black raspberry and spice; complex and layered, long and balanced. 88% Malbec, 7% Petit Verdot, 3% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Cabernet Franc."

2012 Estate Syrah | Heart Hill Vineyard
"Juicy and bright with vanilla, plum and blackberry; spicy, fresh and youthful; long and balanced. 90% Syrah, 5% Malbec 5% Petit Verdot."

Terroirist | 91 Points to 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon

November 26, 2014

2012 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon | Bootjack Ranch
"Dark ruby color. On the nose: currant jam, tart blueberries, some mocha, violets, deep loamy soil, sweet vanilla and dark chocolate. On the palate, I like the combination of tart acid and dusty tannins — the structure is great here. The cool red currants and tart blueberries come in waves, very clean and pure. I love the graphite, roasted coffee, underlying tobacco and sage elements. Complex, it has staying power, somehow both elegant and bold. Includes dashes of Petite Verdot and Carmenere, aged 18 months in 33% new oak."

2012 Estate Pinot Noir | Jespersen Ranch
"Highly recommended"

Rich Cook | 90 Points for 2012 Estate Pinot Noir

November 14, 2014

2012 Estate Pinot Noir | Jespersen Ranch
"Edna Valley is still an underrated appellation, particularly when it comes to Pinot Noir, and this wine is making yet another argument that this Central Coast area is one of the premier regions for the grape. Bright citrus zest, cherry, damp earth, raspberry, vanilla and mulling spices come together thanks to just the right combination of viscosity and acidity. If you deep fry turkey this would make a great match."

Tasting Panel Magazine | 92 Points for 2011 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon

November 6, 2014

2011 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon | Bootjack Ranch
"Lovely place of spice, plum and black raspberry; balanced, dusty and long."

Connoisseur’s Guide to California | 91 Points for 2010 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon

August 1, 2014

2010 Cabernet Sauvignon | Bootjack Ranch
"Backing away from the pushy ripeness that more often than not is shown by Cabernets of its provenance, Niner’s Bootjack Ranch bottling shows fine varietal precision with notes of leather, sweetoak and cocoa set against insistent, cassis-and cherry-like fruit. It is supple and slightly fleshy in feel with integral tannin lending just the right degree of structural firmness and spine, and its very careful balance encourages five or six years of keeping even if it is a fairly mannerly, easy-to-taste wine at this point."

Wine Enthusiast Magazine: Niner 2010 Sangiovese Receives 90 POINTS!

October 1, 2013

Reviewed by Wine Enthusiast editor, Steve Heimoff, our 2010 Sangiovese received 90 POINTS!

Here's what Steve had to say about this 90 POINT wine:

"Lots of smooth drinking pleasure in this Sangiovese. In fact, it does just what this Italian variety is supposed to. It's medium-bodied and silky, with great acidity and a firm brace of tannins, and has a transparency that seems to reflect the soil. The cherry and red currant flavors are savory and pure. A little hot, but one of the most pleasant Sangioveses on the market." --S.H. (10/1/2013)

Wine Enthusiast Magazine: Niner 2012 Albarino Receives 88 POINTS & 'Editors' Choice' award!

October 1, 2013

Reviewed by Wine Enthusiast Editor, Steve Heimoff, our 2012 Albarino received 88 POINTS and 'Editors' Choice' Award!

Here's what Steve had to say about the Albarino:

"The tart acidity, clean minerality and intense citrus, green apple, kiwi, honey and goosdeberry flavors immediately suggest a cool growing area. Edna Valley it is, with excellent results. The wine has no trace of oak, so what you get is brisk, mouthwatering fruit and a dry finish." --S.H. (10/1/2013)
