Serious Inaugural Vintage from Niner Wine Estates
“Niner Wine Estates
of Paso Robles, California, released its inaugural vintage and is poised to open
a winery and tasting room in the summer of 2007. Dick and Pam Niner have worked
on the project for more than three years, and own two vineyards representing
more than 260 acres, with 116 planted to 11 varietals. Among others, winemaker
Chuck Ortman, who founded Meridian Vineyards, is consulting on the project. The
first wines are from the Bootjack Ranch property…”

Local Wine Picks
“You don't need to look far to find Syrah's that would be at home on the
table at your backyard barbecue. There are plenty of them being produced
from the vineyards of Paso Robles.
This week's picks include three such wines at a variety of prices.
Niner Wine Estates 2005 Bootjack Ranch Syrah, $20
This reasonably priced syrah from Niner's vineyard on the east side of Paso
Robles is plump and ripe, with blackberry, coffee and white pepper notes.
It's also on the tannic side, so either decant it or drink it with a hearty
meat dish...”

93 Points
Jane Garvey, Connect with Wine, March, 2008
Tasting Note:
Medium, full-bodied dry red wine; medium-deep dark garnet red. Aromas
of brown spice and dark fruits. Flavors blend perfectly, seamlessly fresh dark
fruits with fruit-derived elegant tannins. Aromatic brown spices (especially
clove) add interest. Exquisitely balanced, with tannins, fruit, acidity all
in synch. Substantial alcohol, leaving a bit of heat in the finish, but the
fruit throws its weight against the alcohol, and the texture is silky. Has
15% Cabernet Franc. Terrific value. Late-arriving news: Alpharetta resident
Mike Musso is Niner's president and general manager.
Suggested Food Pairings:
Potpie of braised beef short ribs; Thai-style beef salad (both STATS);
fajitas de carnitas with sautéed onions and bell peppers (Los Bravos); stews including
root vegetable stew with pancetta or country ham; smoked pork rib; grilled Cornish
hen brushed with black currant jam glaze; grilled ham, beef or lamb steak; well-aged
creamy bleu cheese (Fourme d’Ambert, for example).

“Citrus aromas followed
by ripe grapefruit on the medium-bodied palate. Bright and refreshing but silky
rather than zippy. Good as aperitif or with salsa.”
Sante Magazine - October, 2006
“While Niner is a new
winery, its vineyards are not. The 2004 Sauvignon Blanc, Bootjack Ranch, Paso
Robles, $15, has light aromas of citrus peel and hay before soft, round flavors
of the same plus lemon which finish medium-broad and truncated. ”
The Colorado Wine News - April-June, 2006
“ This was my first taste
of Niner, one of the newest labels from Paso Robles, and I was impressed. Full-bodied
like Sauvignons labeled Fume Blanc, it offers round, lush flavors and aromas
of kiwi, casaba melon and lime, highlighted with notes of grapefruit. It’s
quite drinkable on its own but this crisp varietal loves to complement food.
Winemaker Amanda Cramer suggests pairing this with coconut shrimp, rosemary-lemon
pasta or freshly-shucked oysters. It’s also an excellent choice for vegetarian
dishes. Only $15 retail; it’s just entering local markets and restaurants.”

“Niner Wine Estates.
What’s their deal: A two-vineyard winery in Paso Robles with excellent
taste…Welcome to Wine Country!
Flagship wine: Their 2003 Sangiovese was a party of earth, nut and berry—one
of the finest dry reds we tasted all weekend . ”

Where Art Thou, Sangiovese
“2003 Niner, Boot Jack
Ranch, Paso Robles, $20. Nicely defined ripe-cherry fruitiness sits comfortably
at the heart of this neatly balanced effort, and, if never less than fully ripe, the wine
sports a bit of the acidy snap and brightness that typifies good Sangiovese. Medium-full-bodied, fairly firm at the finish
and showing a quiet wisp of trailing tannin, it is open and tasty right now, but it could grow over the next couple of years. ”

Recommended - A Look at Paso Syrahs
Laurie Daniels - The Tribune - November 30, 2005
“The 2003 Syrah,
Bootjack Ranch, Paso Robles, $20, was aged for 16 months in mostly French oak,
about one-third new. It opens with smoky oak before flavors of cherry, cranberry,
and smoky oak plus tannin. Everything continues through the medium-long finish
which shows a touch of alcohol at the end .”
The Colorado Wine News - April-June, 2006
Super Syrahs From Paso Robles
“Paso Robles has long
been known for zinfandel, but these days syrah has
eclipsed zin in many people's minds. Styles range from elegant and savory to
super-ripe and over the top. Some other Paso Syrahs are tighter and more
structured. That's the case with the 2003 Niner BootJack Ranch Syrah ($20).
This is the inaugural syrah from Niner Wine Estates, on Paso Robles east
side, and it's a well balanced wine with black raspberry, nice spice, juicy
acidity and firm structure.”
